It doesn’t happen very often, but the girls swimming meet between St. Rose and Ocean Township ended in a tie at the Asbury Park Boys & Girls Club on Wednesday afternoon.
The final score was 85-85, after St. Rose’s touched the wall first in the 400 freestyle relay to match Ocean’s score.
St. Rose (6-3-1) won nine out of the 11 events after strong performances by Casey Lawson and Bridget Lynch. Lawson won three events including the 50 freestyle (26.69), the 100 freestyle (59.16) and the 500 freestyle (5:37.97). Lynch also won three events after first-place finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:30.72), the 100 butterfly (1:10.59) and the 100 backstroke (1:09.37).
Ocean (4-3-1) started the meet off strong by winning the 200 medley relay in 2:07.61. In the next event, St. Rose’s Katie Hammond won the 200 freestyle (2:07.97) to start a string of eight straight first-place finishes for the Purple Roses.
Ocean’s McKayla Conti broke the streak by winning the 100 breaststroke (1:15.85). St. Rose then won the 400 relay in 4:06.40 to settle for the tie.
IN BOYS SWIMMING:
OCEAN 131, ST. ROSE 32: Jake Yasser won two events as the Spartans (10-0, 4-0) defeated the Purple Roses (0-8, 0-3) in a Class B North meet. Yasser swam 2:22.53 in the 200 individual medley and 1:13.97 in the 100 breaststroke. Also, Alex Lamberti won the 50 freestyle (25.16) and the 100 freestyle (57.78) for Ocean.
IN BOYS BASKETBALL:
POINT BEACH 74, KEYPORT 52: Point Beach senior PJ Kinneavy scored a game-high 32 points, including 24 from beyond the arc, as the Garnet Gulls (10-0, 7-0) extended their undefeated stretch by flying past the Red Raiders (7-3, 4-3) in a Class B Central game.
Matt Farrell added 16 points for the Garnet Gulls.
Keyport’s Alex Thomson scored a team-high 23 points while grabbing five rebounds and dealing out three assists. Connor Thomson added nine points and five rebounds for Keyport.
IN GIRLS BASKETBALL:
TR EAST 49, FREEHOLD TWP. 37: Mary Kate Sullivan scored 14 of her game-high 19 points in the the second half as the Raiders (8-4) overcame the Patriots (4-8) in a nondivisional matchup.
Toms River East junior guard Cassie Varvaro provided a spark off the bench by scoring 11 points, including six from behind the arc.
Freehold Township sophomore center Tori Wagner scored a team-high 10 points.
IN FIELD HOCKEY:
St. John Vianney senior forward Nicole Granito will sign her letter of intent Feb. 6 to play for Sacred Heart (Conn.) University, according to her mother Mary Granito.
