With his team trailing by a point, Stratford wrestler, senior Steve Marquardt, knew that if he was to win the final match of the dual against Pittsville, his Tigers would leave the Pittsville Fieldhouse victorious.
Marquardt was able to score points early on, and was able to withstand a late rally by Adam Sturgis, as Stratford rallied for a 30-28 win Thursday night in a Marawood Conference dual.
“This was a great win for us, and we won the big matches,” Stratford coach Joe Schwabe said. “This was a fun match and came down to the wire. Both teams had their studs but it came down to which of the evenly matched wrestlers won.”
Stratford trailed 28-27 heading into Marquardt’s match, where he quickly took a 4-0 lead in the first period when he caught Sturgis in a throw. He later extended his lead to 6-0 before Sturgis was able to cut the lead to 6-2 on a reversal, and nearly cut into the lead even more when he had Marquardt caught in a tip, but was unable to expose his shoulders to the mat.
“This was the first time this year that a dual came down to my match,” Marquardt said. “I was really nervous and the move I did, I didn’t do right in the past, so I had to make sure it was tight.”
Until Marquardt’s victory, the Tigers had only held one lead and that was a 27-25 lead after Alex Heiden received a forfeit at 132 pounds. Pittsville’s Eddie Kleinhenz (138) then knocked off R.J. Schiller 8-2 to give Pittsville a 28-27 lead heading into the final match.
“This was a very fun dual to watch,” Pittsville coach Dan Hahn said. “Matches this time of year are a real gut check, and a measuring stick. I’m happier to lose the matches we did tonight than in the regional.”
With the draw weight at 152, the Panthers had to make a lineup change due to their starting wrestler being sick, which seemed to work out for them as they rolled out to a 9-0 lead on a 9-8 decision by Kaleb Meyer (152) and a pin by Nathan Potter (160.)
After receiving a forfeit Stratford rolled off a pair of decisions by Dondrick Tackes (195) and Hunter Kauffman (220) to knot the score at 12-12.
The teams traded forfeits at heavyweight and 106 before alternating another pair of decisions by Pittsville’s Scott Worlund (113) and Stratford’s Phil Sersch (120) to force another tie at 21-21. Pittsville regained the lead on a major decision by Jared Fox (126) before heading into the final decisive matches.
