The outcome of the third-place match was squarely on the shoulders of Don Veverka.
The D.C. Everest sophomore needed at least a major decision for the Evergreens to beat Baraboo.
Veverka, the Evergreens’ 126-pounder, did even better. He pinned the Thunderbirds’ Patrick Broe in 4 minutes, 35 seconds to secure a 31-29 win and third place finish at the SPASH Duals on Saturday.
“This win was real big for us,” Everest coach Eric Lehrke said. “The match was dictating that we had to try for a major decision or even a tech fall if we wanted to win, but we got a pin instead.”
Veverka held an 11-3 lead and at the 4 minute 31 second mark of the match, he caught Patrick Broe in a throw and earned the fall.
The Evergreens had a pair of wrestlers, Joe Ziolkowski (145) and Jack Freix (120), go undefeated in the tournament.
Entering its home dual meet tournament, the Stevens Point Area Senior High wrestlers hoped to show that they were a state contender.
The Panthers upset hopes against No. 9 Holmen fell short, 34-25, in the championship match, but showed they are on the rise.
“They are just so tough where we are not the strongest with our lineup,” SPASH coach Duane Groshek said. “The heart of our lineup kept it close, but we got put in tough spots for our lighter weights.”
Despite finishing their pool without a victory, Wausau East was able to end the day on a high note as they finished in ninth place with a 39-25 victory over Appleton West.
The Lumberjacks’ Nick Diny (120) and Brook Whitehead (138) both finished undefeated.
“The last match gave us a lot of confidence.” East coach Matt Anderson said. “This was the best we have wrestled as a team all year, and were competitive in our matches.”
