High school wrestling: Squads ready for clash at Floyd Farrand

By

The Floyd Farrand Invitational wrestling tournament is as much a holiday tradition as anything else for some, with 18 teams taking to the mats for the prestigious tourney on Friday and Saturday at Lincoln High school.

Brandon Valley, Brookings, Harrisburg, Lennox, Milbank, Sturis Tea, Vermillion and Watertown are among the Class A squads joining the Sioux Falls schools. Canton, Garretson, Howard, Parkston and Wagner make up the Class B grapplers carrying on the tradition of mixing it up with ‘A’ competition.

Don’t let the classification throw you for a loop, though. Defending state champion Parkston won the Floyd Farrand last season by 22 points, and the Trojans are the favorite again this weekend with three wrestlers ranked in the top 12.

“The remarkable thing about Parkston, to be a ‘B’ school that small, is the amount of balance that team has at a higher level,” said Roosevelt coach Darrell Kortan. “You let me wrestle my first seven wrestlers against Parkston, I’ll bet my house on it that we’re gonna win. But they’re top-heavy with Brady Reiff and (Andrew) Semmler and (Mitch) Heisinger. They’ve just got such good balance and at a tournament like this. That really gives them an edge.”

The Rough Riders, ranked No. 1 in Class A, have five wrestlers ranked either first or second in their respective weight classes and should have a say in the final standings if their lower weights – a strength this season – can do some damage on Friday.

Washington, Sturgis and Watertown are also expected to make a push, while standouts like Howard’s Luke Loudenburg, Wagner’s David Kocer and Canton’s Alex Davies and Tanner Broughton will also be on display as the season kicks into another gear.

“The great thing about the Floyd is it’s a real good indicator going into the beginning of the new year and where you start to see the season really start to take shape,” said Kortan. “Teams get a real great barometer of where they’re going to size up.”
