Hillcrest, J.L. Mann and Mauldin had their final tuneups for the upcoming season Aug. 23 at the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic at Freeman Field.

Beau Craft scored on runs of 5 and 17 yards, and Mauldin capped the night with a 24-0 victory over Berea.

The Mavericks scored first on a 3-yard touchdown run by Taz Richardson at the nine-minute mark of the first quarter. Rashun Gupton and Tony Wideman each had an interception for Mauldin.

Hillcrest grabbed a 14-0 victory over Wren. Rams defensive linemen Kadarius Leake, Rodderick Stoddard and Vita Williams combined for four sacks in the first quarter. Linebacker J.D. Ballenger forced a fumble and collected an interception for the Rams.

Isaiah Lewis returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown to give the Rams a 7-0 lead with 2:32 left in the first quarter. The Georgia Southern commit fumbled the punt but was able to collect the ball and bolt for the end zone.

Hillcrest had a third-and-three with 2:47 left in the matchup when quarterback Collin Sneed passed to wide receiver Jarell Barksdale in stride on a corner route for a 26-yard touchdown.

Hillcrest and Mauldin will square off in their regular-season opener Friday night at Freeman Field.

J.L. Mann got off to a shaky start in its 7-0 loss against Carolina. A Trojans defender returned an interception for a touchdown to give Carolina an early lead.

On the Patriots’ next drive, quarterback Cooper Jackson passed to wide receiver Jonathan Clay-Hanson for a 32-yard gain. Lee Sullivan carried the ball twice to advance the ball to Carolina’s 7-yard line. However, Mann’s field goal attempt was blocked.

Jackson passed to wide receiver Brian Jennings for a 47-yard gain on the final drive of the game. The Patriots snapped the ball with four seconds left, but Jackson’s long pass to Jennings fell incomplete.
