The Hilton girls bowling team set a state record for total pins in a final three-game series and nearly rode that all the way to a state title.
The Cadets totaled 3,214 pins over their final three games to finish in second with 5,967, just 86 behind champion Middle Country of Section XI on the first day of the state championships Saturday at Strike ‘n Spare Lanes in Syracuse.
Anai Flanigan led the charge for Hilton, recording games of 235, 238 and 277 in the last three for a six-game total of 1,396.
Her 277-game was the second-best for the day, and her series was the third-highest overall.
Steph Urbonas added a 1,236 series and Hannah Petroske had a 1,234 series for the Cadets.
The Greece Athena boys had a consistent showing while finishing fourth.
The Trojans finished with 6,282 pins, while champion South Colonie-II totaled 6,511.
Kyle Trick had the top series for all competitors at 1,442, including a high game of 279.
Bryce Hook had the next-highest series for the Trojans with 1,363. That included a 297 game, the highest any bowler recorded.
The individual and sectional championships will be held Sunday.
