HNT baseball: Diaz four-hitter paces New Brunswick to upset of Spotswood


Waldo Diaz pitched a complete-game four-hitter to lead the New Brunswick High School baseball team to Wednesday’s 4-2 upset of Spotswood.

Diaz fanned nine, walked six and allowed two earned runs. He went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. He also snapped Alex Christian’s hitting streak at 15 games.

New Brunswick (2-9) took the lead for good in the fifth on an Ariel Hernandez single and a Felix Nunez hit. Spotswood answered with a run in the bottom half on a Corey Brown single. New Brunswick scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to produce the final margin.

Nick Vizzi (0-1) was the hard-luck loser for the Chargers (10-5).

J.P. Stevens 4, Sayreville 2: After Chris Lee tripled, Joe Siecinski lined a single to right past a drawn-in infield on a first-pitch offering to give the Hawks (7-12) a 3-2 lead in the home sixth. Senior third baseman Jimmy Boyle added an insurance run with a two-out single to right in the same inning. Winning pitcher Charlie Fallon (3-1) went the distance. He allowed five hits, fanned three and walked four.

Monroe 7, Woodbridge 5: The Falcons rallied from a 5-3 deficit. Jeff Htam’s fifth-inning RBI singled knotted the score and Anthony Parente’s sixth-inning RBI single gave Monroe a 6-5 lead. Andrew Cohen earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief. He fanned four, walked one and did not allow a hit. Cohen went 2-for-4. Jesse Lammers went 3-for-3 with a walk for the Barrons (8-10).

Colonia 11, North Brunswick 10: Colonia (6-10) scored eight runs in the top of the sixth inning, mounting a great comeback. Ryan Pennell finished 2-for-5 with two RBI for the Patriots. Pennell served up the go ahead base hit, driving in two runs on the play. North Brunswick drops to 6-9.

South Brunswick 6, Perth Amboy 0: Winning pitcher Sean Keenan went the distance with a two-hitter. He also scored twice for the Vikings (11-4). The Panthers fell to 6-7.

Metuchen 5, South River 1: The Bulldogs (10-3) took advantage of seven errors. Paul Rhodes and Andrew Corvil had two hits apiece for Metuchen. Winning pitcher Andrew Walters went the distance, allowing seven hits and fanning five. Wyatt Boyler (three hits) and Matt Leviton (two hits) each had an RBI for the Rams (4-10).

Dunellen 15, Timothy Christian 3: Casey Wenzel went 2-for-4, recording the 100th hit of his career with a fourth-inning single, while leading Dunellen. Paul Appleton had a two-run homer for the Destroyers (13-1). Luke Cruver and Matt Zgorzynski had two hits apiece for the Tigers (3-9).

Bishop Ahr 5, Carteret 1: Winning pitcher Mike Bernet scattered two hits, fanned nine and did allow an earned run. Mike Kelly’s three-run triple gave Bishop Ahr (4-6) a 4-1 lead in the fifth. Hunter Llerena contributed a solo homer. Tyler Rodriguez had an RBI single for the Ramblers (5-10).

East Brunswick Tech 9, Piscataway Tech 4: Joe Petrillo went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored for the Tigers (5-8). Teammate Christian Salvatore singled, walked and had two RBI. Freshman Jason Lodzinski (1-1) earned the victory on the mound. Jefferson Bonialla went 3-for-4 with a triple, three runs scored and a stolen base for the Raiders.
