HNT softball: J.P. Stevens wins Viking Spring Classic

Rebecca DiSerio’s two-run, two-out bloop single in the third inning proved to be the difference and winning pitcher Rebecca Coleman earned MVP honors as the two helped lead the J.P. Stevens High School softball team to a 4-3 victory over South Brunswick in the championship game of the first Viking Spring Classic-Strikeout Breast Cancer event in Monmouth Junction on Saturday.

The Hawks (11-1) took a 1-0 lead in the second on three consecutive two-out singles as Danielle DeBenedtto singled in Julianna Zilli before scoring three in the third.

DiSerio and Steph Garrison each went 2-for-4 while Coleman allowed three earned runs on five hits, striking out nine and walking two.

South Brunswick (9-5) battled back with three runs in the fourth, keyed by a Sara Finnegan double, an RBI single by Leann Panconi, an RBI single by Ashley Shor, and a squeeze bunt by Julie Foeldes.

First Round

South Brunswick 12, Hamilton West 2 (6 inn.): Sara Finnegan went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI while Melissa Mielko went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and three RBI to lead South Brunswick (9-4). LEann Panconi and Ashley Shor each pitched three innings and gave up a combined four hits.

Somerset County Tournament second round

Franklin 4, Pingry 2: Shannon Fillmore drove in a run and scored another in the second inning and Ashley Rupp added a two-run homer in the fourth inning Saturday and 11th-seeded Franklin upset No. 6 Pingry in the second round of the Somerset County Tournament. Fillmore drove in courtesy runner Jasmine Cruz with the first run and crossed the plate on an illegal pitch to make it 2-0 in the second inning, before Rupp’s blast made it 2-0 in the fourth. Sarah Smith earned the victory, as the Warriors improved to 6-6, as the sophomore allowed one earned run on three hits, two walks and struck out seven.

Viking Classic at South Brunswick

Consolation final

Carteret 13, Hamilton West 1 (5 innings): Rebecca Welch went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI, and Heather Androvich added a homer and three RBI to send Carteret in the consolation final of the Viking Classic. Megan Klecha allowed no earned runs on five hits to earn the victory.

First round

J.P. Stevens 11, Carteret 0: Kayla Smith and Amanda Lombardi each drove in two runs to power J.P. Stevens. Smith and Rebecca Coleman combined on the three-hit shutout as the Hawks improved to 10-1. Giselles Perez, Kati Golino, Megan Klecha and Caitlin Kelly picked up hits for Carteret (8-5).

Regular season

Wardlaw-Hartridge 20, Rutgers Prep 0 (4 innings): Ali Yamakaits drove in four runs and pitched four perfect innings with six strikeouts as Wardlaw-Hartridge remained undefeated. Lacey Gress finished 2-for-2 with four runs and three RBI for the Rams (11-0). Rutgers Prep fell to 1-7.
