The Pawling High School hockey team kicked off the season with an 8-3 win over John F. Kennedy Catholic in the opening game of the Icebreaker Tournament at Brewster Ice Arena on Friday.
Taylor Folchetti and Sean Reynolds each had two goals and two assists for Pawling, which will face the winner of today’s Carmel-Brewster winner on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. in Brewster. Kennedy scored the game’s first two goals, but Pawling scored the next four to close the first period and had eight unanswered goals overall.
The Tigers’ win was the first for new coach Matthew Whitehurst.
“We started out slow, going down 2-0, but the kids bounced back and we had the lead at the end of the first,” Whitehurst said. “It feels good to get the first win under our belt.”
Austin Johnson added a goal and two assists for Pawling, while James Comerford contributed two goals. Tyler Parker had a goal and Noah Clowry an assist for Pawling. Tigers goalie Justin Virkus made 14 saves and fellow goalie James Barry made two.
