A team is always a reflection of their head coach. For the Metuchen girls tennis team, the man behind the scenes was represented very well on and off the court.
Rob Strauss, Metuchen’s head coach and this year’s Home News Tribune Tennis Coach of the Year, knew his team would be strong despite losing some of it’s better players, and his team failed to disappoint.
“I knew we had a strong team last year,” said Strauss, “we lost three of our four doubles players…but we’re a deep team and we were able to fill in our doubles spots.”
With the depth of the team solving the doubles problems, the team was able to reel off a stellar 24-2 record, and Strauss could not be more proud of his team.
“Our goal is to try and be undefeated in our division,” said Strauss, “Obviously we wanted to try and go back to take the Group I title for the entire state, but I’d say we achieved what we set out to do.”
Even though his team experienced great success, Strauss refuses to take all of the credit.
“We’ve had a volunteer assistant coach, Grace Allgauer,” said Strauss, “The last couple years she’s been helping us out, really working with the JV girls and it’s allowed me to be a better varsity coach.”
Metuchen will look to continue their successes, even though they will lose four players from their lineup.
“I just really hope they come prepared and work hard in the offseason,” said Strauss, “I think we’ll still set those same goals and I think we can achieve it as well.”
