Hortonville 50, Rhinelander 43

At Wausau, Jacob Bamke didn’t let feeling a bit under the weather stop him from scoring on Thursday.

Bamke scored 27 points to lead Hortonville to a victory over Rhinelander, sending the Polar Bears to the sectional final game on Saturday.

Hortonville will play Onalaska at 5 p.m. in Marshfield. Onalaska moved on with a 47-39 win over Rice Lake.

The Polars Bears were efficient defensively, using a variety of defenses to make open shots difficult to find for Rhinelander and not letting the Hodags get many second-chance opportunities.

Hortonville coach Matt Hintz credited some unsung heroes with making the win possible.

“We’ve got five kids on the scout team who prepped the kids who played all the minutes,” Hintz said. “If we don’t see what Rhinelander does in practice and the great look the scout team gave us, we probably don’t win tonight.”

That prep work allowed Hortonville to ready for Rhinelander’s pressure defense and, as a result, commit few turnovers.

At Suamico, Luke Van Lanen scored 20 points, including 13 in the second half, and Cody Wichmann added 14 to lead Pulaski.

Pulaski (21-4) will play Grafton (11-14) at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in Fond du Lac. The Red Raiders are seeking their first trip to the state tournament since 1989.

Dakota Oskey led Seymour with 19 points, while Sandy Cohen was held to eight.

“You want to make them play from behind,” Seymour coach Jon Murphy said of Pulaski. “Then you can kind of establish tempo. They just control the game. They get up, and they make it a grinder. It shortens up the game, and it frustrates you.”

Seymour didn’t go away, though.

The Thunder clamped down on defense to start the fourth quarter, forcing four turnovers on Pulaski’s first five possessions and scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the quarter to get to within 36-33 with 4:09 remaining.
