HS Baseball Roundup: Fiore puts Garnet Gulls over the top

By

Nick Fiore broke a tie in the top of the seventh inning with a two-run single to right and then scored what turned out to be the winning run on the back end of a first-and-third double steal as visiting Point Pleasant Beach scored seven runs and hung on for a 13-12 win over Keyport in a wild Shore Conference Class B Central game.

The Garnet Gulls’ outburst wiped out a 10-6 deficit and gave them a 13-10 lead.

Keyport (0-2, 0-2) pulled within a run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run double by Greg Armstrong, but Point Beach (2-0, 2-0) recorded the final out on a ground ball up the middle which the shortstop fielded and threw to first.

Fiore was 2-for-3 with a walk, three RBI and scored two runs.

Joe Ruth had a three-run triple, Nick Smutz went 3-for-4 with two RBI and John Olsen was 2-for-3 with a solo homer and stole two bases for Keyport.

TR SOUTH 2, LACEY 1: Junior right fielder Russell Messler capped an outstanding game in the field by making a shoe-string catch for the final out with the tying and winning runs on second and first, respectively to preserve a win over Lacey (0-2, 0-2) for the Indians (1-1, 1-1) in a Class A South game.

Messler, who is also one of the Shore Conference’s best hitters, concluded the fifth and sixth innings by throwing runners out at the plate on fly balls.

Messler scored the game’s first run in the top of the first when he walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, went to third on a ground out and scored on a passed ball.

Kevin Fox’s suicide squeeze in the seventh made it 2-0.

Senior right-hander Casey Cranmer pitched a complete-game seven-hitter.

Leadoff batter Eric Reitmeyer had three hits for Lacey.

BRICK 6, TR EAST 5: Tyler Wicker’s single up the middle with one out in the bottom of the seventh scored pinch-runner Nick Pollara with the winning run as the Green Dragons (2-0, 2-0) defeated the Raiders (1-1, 1-1) in a Class A South game.

Tyler Iannarone started the winning rally with an infield single. He moved to second on Brad Applegate’s single. Pollara then came on to run for Iannarone.

Senior right-hander Brian Henry pitched three scoreless innings to pick up the win.

Iannarone and Applegate both went 2-for-3 with an RBI and both scored a run. Wicker had two RBI.

C.J. Hirschy and Jon Meola went 2-for-3 and 2-for 4, respectively for Toms River East.

HENRY HUDSON 1, ASBURY PARK 0: Chaz Briethoff scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the first on a passed ball and senior right-hander Jim Trivett pitched a complete-game three-hitter as the Admirals (2-0, 2-0) defeated the Blue Bishops (0-2, 0-2) in a Class B Central game.

Briethoff reached on a bunt single with one out, moved to second on a ground out by Ben Thompson, to third on a passed ball before he scored.

Trivett struck out five and walked none.

PINELANDS 2, MANCHESTER 1: Joey Lunn pitched a compete-game two-hitter and Bailey Taylor had a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the fourth as the Wildcats (1-1, 1-1) defeated the Hawks (0-2, 0-1) and gave first-year head coach Rob Sanzari his first varsity coaching win.

Lunn struck out four and walked none.

John Sudol had an RBI single in the sixth for Manchester.

JACKSON LIBERTY 7, CENTRAL 1: Tyler Pallante struck out 10 and scattered six hits and Dan Serreino, Brendan Bekecke and Angel Garced all had two-run singles as the Lions (2-0, 2-0) defeated the Golden Eagles (1-1, 1-1) in a Class B South game.

ST. ROSE 5, MATER DEI 3: Connor Gammond went 2-for-2 with two walks, scored two runs and stole five bases as the Purple Roses (1-0, 1-0) defeated the Seraphs (1-1, 1-1) in a Class B Central game.
