The Colchester High School girls soccer team came back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to beat visiting Rutland 3-1 on Thursday and deliver head coach Jeff Paul his 100th career victory.
Amber Sicard and Kristi Chapman notched unassisted second-half goals for Colchester, bookending a tally from Taylor Dion (Jenna Baillargeon assist). Rutland had taken a 1-0 lead on a goal by Abigail Bizzarro.
Haley Jestings made six saves for Colchester (2-0), while Renee Triller recorded 13 stops for Rutland (0-2).
* Winooski 3, Concord 1: Sarah Lind scored the go-ahead goal in the second half, then added an insurance tally as Winooski pulled away from visiting Concord.
Concord (0-2) got on the board first via a Cecelia Chamul goal, but Winooski’s Christina Dang netted the equalizer off an assist from Natalie Bray with five minutes remaining in the first half.
Lind then found the visitors’ net twice in the second half, off assists from Riley Corrigan and Avah Eaton.
Michaela Metivier made eight saves for Winooski (2-0), while Concord’s Kendra Darrell turned in 19 saves.
* Essex 4, Rice 2: Brayden Nielson’s hat trick helped host Essex double up Rice in the opening round of the Essex Kickoff tournament.
Nielson put home the match’s first goal off an assist from Danilo Salgado, then one second-half tally with help from Connor Calhoun and another unassisted. Nate Miles scored the other goal for Essex (1-0), off an assist from Eric Lamphere.
Rice’s goals came from Hussein Hussein (Christian Rouleau assist) and Spencer Beattie (penalty kick).
Ben Wood made four saves for Essex, while Leland Gazo and Connor Gorman combined to make nine stops for Rice (0-1).
* Champlain Valley 9, Rutland 0: Zach Akey pumped in four goals as Champlain Valley romped against Rutland in the first round of the Essex Kickoff tournament.
Tucker Shelley, Oliver Choiniare, Richard Baccia, Elliott Mitchell (one assist) and Shane Hanlon also scored for the Redhawks (1-0), who built an 8-0 halftime lead. Joe Castano had two assists.
Danny Kurchena and Ethan Snitker combined for nine saves for the Raiders (0-2). Brandon O’Connell and Oscar Kelley split time in net for Champlain Valley.
* Champlain Valley 2, Colchester 0: Amanda Whitbeck had a hand in both goals as visiting CVU shut out Colchester.
Whitbeck opened scoring 1:08 into the game with an unassisted goal for the Redhawks (2-0). She also assisted on Molly Dunphy’s second-half goal, which came off a penalty corner.
Evangeline Dunphy made two saves to earn the shutout for CVU, while Abby Ladd racked up 18 saves for Colchester (0-2).
