Coming into the season, the Roncalli prep boys tennis team needed to have an individual or doubles team make the medal stand at the WIAA State Tennis Tournament in order to extend its record of consecutive years with a medalist. Junior Brett Giesen proved to be the man for the job.
Giesen, this year’s HTR Media Boys Tennis Player of the Year, was the only Manitowoc County player to advance to State as he went 2-2 at the tournament to earn a sixth-place finish and give the Jets their sixth straight season with a medalist.
Giesen was a No. 5 seed in the tournament and entered with the area’s best singles record at 23-5. His first loss was to the No. 4 seed, who went on to take third.
“I think Brett had a great season during which he learned a lot. Finishing on the medal stand as junior is impressive and bodes well for the future,” Roncalli coach Bob Nelson said in an email. “I know he wanted to keep our medal stand streak going and he did the job. I’m very proud of his performance at State.”
Nelson said he was especially impressed with Giesen’s resolve in his second match at State, where Giesen went ahead 4-0 only to lose 7-5. Giesen rebounded, though, and went on to win the next two matches by scores of 6-3, 6-1.
“Many players would have given up or ‘tanked,’ but Brett just sucked it up and went on to win … and set up his medal run,” Nelson said.
