Vols signee gives teammate a big assist
Dyers County (Newbern, Tenn.) guard Robert Hubbs III showed a little leadership on and off the court this week.
After leading the Choctaw to a 94-53 defeat of Craigmont (Memphis) in the Region 7AAA title game with 23 points, Hubbs was named to the All-Tournament team and was the tournament’s MVP.
The surprise came when Hubbs found out that several teammates had made the All-Tournament team but point guard Malik Pugh had not. Pugh had played well, missing only one of six shots and dishing out eight assists with five rebounds and three steals in the title win, so Hubbs gave Pugh his All-Tournament plaque.
“He (Pugh) really stepped up big for us in the third quarter and I didn’t want him to leave without a trophy in his hand because he deserves it,” Hubbs told the Dyersburg State Gazette.
“I won the MVP award so I wanted him to have my all-tournament trophy.”
Considered a top 15 player by Rivals.com and 247sports.com, the 6-5 Hubbs has already signed a scholarship with Tennessee.
