Evangelical Christian School scored 45 points in the first quarter Friday en route to a 65-12 win over host Canterbury School.
The Sentinels (1-0) scored on their first eight possessions as senior quarterback Caleb Chapman passed for three touchdowns and ran for another, while junior running back Carson Pearlman added three rushing touchdowns in the first quarter barrage. Both sat out the remaining three quarters.
The Sentinels ran for 317 yards, with 255 of them coming in the first half.
“The first quarter everything was clicking right,” said Sentinels coach Tyler Gold. “We finally got some time this week to get some practice in, and we’ve still got a lot more work to do, but it’s a good improvement over last week.”
Canterbury, playing its first game of 11-man football, got off to a slow start. The Cougars (0-1) lost three kickoffs to the Sentinels short kicking game, and reached the red zone only once in the first half.
Senior quarterback Alex Rabinowitz got the Cougars’ first score on a 30-yard run in the third quarter before leaving the game with cramping in his legs. Sophomore Alex Posma threw a 31-yard score in relief to junior Kyle Babb in the closing minutes.
“We learned a lot tonight,” said Cougars coach Michael Marciano. “We knew it was going to be tough, but we’ll fight. We have to get better every week and that’s our goal.”
