Ida Baker’s Regie Meant took the final step Wednesday toward realizing a family dream.
With nine family members behind him, the defensive tackle signed with the University of Kentucky. This fall, Meant will become the first in his family to go to college.
“They always said I’m the last hope, everybody else had their chance,” said Meant, who has three older brothers and one older sister. “Now it’s my time.”
His mother Rose Malbranche moved to Cape Coral from Les Cayes, Haiti in 1989 with hopes of a better life for her family.
“I’m very excited he’s a good boy,” she said. “We’ve been working hard together just me and him to get him to where he is right now.”
Meant had Iowa State high on his list in December but Kentucky’s hiring of respected defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh put the Wildcats in the mix. He verbally committed four days after his official visit in January.
Bulldogs defensive end Will Cunningham committed to play at Georgia State next season in Atlanta, 244 miles from his mother Benita Thompson’s home in Charlotte, N.C.
