THE WINNER: Abby Ramirez
School: Trinity (River Forest, Ill.)
Athletic achievement: She batted .596 with 20 home runs and 48 RBI this past season, leading the Blazers (28-5) to the Class 4A sectional finals. A two-time returning First Team All-State selection as named by the Chicago Tribune, Ramirez scored 60 runs in addition to collecting 20 stolen bases, 12 doubles and five triples. A Preseason MaxPreps Second Team All-American, she produced a .644 on-base percentage and a 1.519 slugging percentage in 2013. Her 20 home runs set a new single-season Class 4A record.
Academic excellence: Ramirez has maintained a 4.11 weighted GPA and served on the school’s executive council.
Exemplary character: She has also volunteered as an officer in the Youth Ending Hunger Club.
“I think Abby Ramirez is one of the best athletes I have ever coached against,” said Colleen Kilduff, head coach of rival Mother McAuley (Evergreen Park, Ill.). “She is an amazing defender and is feared by pitchers when she is at the plate. She is a great competitor and a very respectful young lady. I fully endorse her as this year’s Player of the Year, and I can’t think of anyone in the last five years more deserving of it.”
THE FUTURE: Ramirez has signed with Michigan.
