THE WINNER: Mikaela Foecke
School: Holy Trinity Catholic (Fort Madison, Iowa)
Athletic achievement: She recorded 760 kills, 275 digs, 145 blocks and 90 service aces this past season, leading the Crusaders (47-5) to the Class 1A state final. The Iowa Girls Coaches Association Player of the Year, Foecke was also captain of the Class 1A All-State Tournament Team and was selected for the IGCA and the Des Moines Register Elite All-State teams. She also starred for the US Girls’ Youth National Team, which captured a silver medal at the World Championships in Thailand in August.
Academic excellence: Foecke has maintained a 3.97 GPA.
Exemplary character: Vice president of her class and an officer in the local 4-H club, she has volunteered on behalf of food drives, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and city clean-up initiatives.
“Skills-wise, Foecke is the best high school player I have seen,” said Mike Helling, head coach at Fort Madison (Iowa). “She has tremendous leaping ability coupled with a court awareness beyond her years. She’s a potent weapon whether she’s in the front row or the back row.”
THE FUTURE: Foecke will be a senior next year.
