Island Coast is going to the playoffs. Been there, done that. It’s a banner that they are looking for.

The Gators put up 35 first-quarter points on the way to a 64-6 win over Cypress Lake Friday night. The game secured a spot for Island Coast (6-1, 5-0 in 5A-14). More importantly, it ensured that when Dunbar (5-2, 4-0) visits next Friday, the winner will be the District 5A-14 champion.

“We both have the same expectations,” said Gators coach Joe Bowen. “We’ve both been in the playoffs for a long time now. We both want to be district champs. There’s a little bit of pride there.”

Friday’s game was the second this season in which the Gators scored more than 60 points. They have not won by less than 19 points since Sept. 13.

“You’re always trying to find things out there that you need to improve on,” Bowen said. “Tonight, guys were not lining up correctly. Tonight, there were guys whose spacing was wrong in the passing formation. We definitely have to work on spacing on that. But all in all, I thought it was a good game.”

The Gators had already taken a 21-0 lead before 90 seconds elapsed. Korey Murphy returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Following that, Cypress Lake fumbled the ball away on its first offensive play, which Zachary Lackman recovered. That set up a 4-yard touchdown run for Zelan Lambert. After recovering the ensuing kickoff, it took a few more offensive plays to get the Gators their third touchdown – another short run by Lambert – but they still managed to make it a 21-0 lead before the 10:30 mark.

As the quarterback and the kicker, Bourque’s name appeared frequently in the scoring column. He threw 3 touchdown passes – to James Washington, Christian Diaz and Murphy – ran for one touchdown and kicked 8 extra points. Running back Theodore Mitchell and backup quarterback Joey Lantz added rushing touchdowns.

“The first half we worked on our pass game; the second half we worked on our run game,” Bowen said. “Hopefully this will help fine-tune us for next week’s game.”

The Panthers (1-6, 0-4) were outmatched but not blameless. Three lost fumbles and two interceptions led to four of Island Coast’s nine touchdowns. They did manage a late touchdown, however, as Clifford Moore broke free for a 52-yard run in the fourth quarter.
