Island Coast senior Tyrell Johnson could have taken this track season off. He was committed to Arizona to play football for Rich Rodriguez.

It’s a good thing he decided to stick with track.

Johnson ran a 10.52 in the Region 3A-3 100-meter preliminary heats, a personal best. In the final he was matched up with Gibbs sprinter Trayvon Bromell.

Bromell came through in 10.14 in the final, while Johnson ran a 10.40. Bromell’s time ranks second in the nation and the 2013 News-Press All-Area Player of the Year Johnson’s time is ranked 19th.

That time also gave Johnson a school record and broke Clemson sophomore wideout Sammy Watkins’ Lee County record (10.45) in the 100-meter.

“This is what I had been waiting on all year,” Johnson said of seeing the 10.40 on the screen. “My goal was to either get a 10.4 or 10.3. When I was running earlier in the season I kept dropping 10.7’s. Then I saw that 10.4 and I just felt great.”

Johnson placed third in the 100 (10.72) and fourth in the 200 (21.79) at the Class 3A state finals.
