Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) receiver Jeremy McNichols thinks it’s a laughable question.
“Which sport has the best athletes?” he repeats. “Come on; it’s football of course.”
Wondering how McNichols can be so matter-of-fact?
Here are his reasons.
Why is the ultimate athlete in your sport?
We work the hardest and we grind the hardest of any sport. We get tested more than any other athletes with all of the training that we have to go through. And in every test you have to show great athleticism. It’s common for us.
For anyone who disagrees, what drill specific to football would you like to see them try?
Definitely Oklahomas. It’s a hitting drill. It’s only for tough players.
What sport comes after football in producing the best athletes?
What's the best measure of a true athlete (strength, speed, quickness, agility, etc.)?
I honestly think it’s mental toughness. You have to go through so much within the course of a season that tests you mentally. It’s way tougher to be mentally tough.
Who is the best athlete in the sport of football, past or present?
What is the best example of something you have seen personally that shows why football has the ultimate athlete?
I think just when I catch the ball over defenders. You have to be really focused and have guts to go up over the defender. It’s really hard and you’ve really gotta be athletic to do it.
