Jett Duffey's big game gives Lake Ridge its first win in program history

Even though Lake Ridge (Mansfield, Texas) struggled through an 0-10 inaugural varsity football season in 2012, coach Kirk Thor resisted the urge to call up talented freshman quarterback Jett Duffey.

That move paid off Friday as the sophomore, in his first varsity start, threw for 348 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 109 yards and three touchdowns in a 77-75 triple-overtime defeat of Centennial (Burleson).

"Last year, we opened as a brand-new school and we had a lot of varsity kids who had never played before," Thor said. "Our philosophy was, 'Let's make sure we make good decisions for a long-term benefit.' We wanted to keep our freshman team together so it could establish success."

When Lake Ridge scored the winning two-point conversion on Duke Carter's run, the team was so excited, it didn't give Thor a celebratory ice bath.

"It was an exciting night for our kids," Thor said. "They were down in the third quarter and kept competing. We run multiple formations in a no-huddle offense that we call fast-break football. We're not very big, but we've turned that into an advantage."
