Kaukauna Ghosts advance eight wrestlers to WIAA state meet

Kaukauna will be well-represented at the WIAA Division 1 individual state wrestling meet when it gets under way in Madison on Thursday.

The Ghosts qualified eight individuals for the state meet and had four individual champions at the Division 1 sectional in Fond du Lac on Saturday. Neenah advanced two wrestlers to the state meet, while Kimberly advanced one wrestler to state.

Tres Leon started Kaukauna’s qualifying parade by winning the championship at 106 pounds by pinning Port Washington’s Manny Rosado in 1:36. Robert Lee (120), Kolton Jansen (126) and Evan Hietpas (132) also won sectional titles.

Kaukauna’s other state qualifiers are Nick Dercks (195), Tyler Nelson (220), Justin Kloehn (138) and Bailey VanHandel (113).

Neenah’s state qualifiers are Josh Cowling (120) and Mitchell Ledwith (220). Ledwith won the sectional title by defeating Kaukauna’s Tyler Nelson 1-0.

Kimberly’s state representative is also a sectional champion. Blair Mulholland defeated Nick Hahn of Hartford 10-2 in the championship match at 160 pounds.

The top two at each weight class in Division 1 advance to state.

De Pere Sectional

Menasha is sending two wrestlers to the individual state wrestling meet and those two are going as champions.

Jimmy Sell and Zeek Hooyman won sectional championships at 126 and 220 pounds, respectively.

Sell won his championship with a 6-5 decision over Evan Garcia of Green Bay Preble/East. Sell had advanced to the championship by pinning Zac Broullire of De Pere in 1:05 in the quarterfinals and then defeating Sam Rathburn of Bay Port 11-2 in the semifinals.

Hooyman pinned his way to the sectional title. Hooyman pinned Joe Southern of Ashwaubenon in 4:54 in his quarterfinal match, pinned Hunter Micholicek of Pulaski in 1:53 and then won the title in a mere 36 seconds with his pin of Isaiah Hayes of De Pere.

Appleton North’s David Granatelli and Brett Handschke advanced to the state tournament by finishing second. Granatelli was pinned by Chase Farr of Bay Port in 4:46 of the 120-pound championship match but then defeated Jake Close of New London 10-4 in the second-place wrestleback to earn his berth at state.

Handschke lost his 170-pound championship match to Anthony Rottier of Pulaski 3-2 but bounced back to defeat Danny Nicholson of Green Bay Preble/East 9-5 in the second-place wrestleback match.
