Kimball's Berres wins wrestling title weighing in at 126

By

Kimball’s Quinten Berres was so excited after winning a state championship, he got a little turned around. He also didn’t know what to say.

The 126-pound sophomore earned a 5-2 decision over Tyler Tensen from Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on Saturday in the Class A championship of the Minnesota state wrestling tournament at the Xcel Energy Center.

Berres shook Tensen’s hand after having his hand raised, jogged off the floor, and entered one of the tunnels at the Xcel Center. After a few minutes of celebrating, a Kimball assistant coach laughed and told Berres that all his gear was in a different tunnel on the opposite side of the arena.

That only made Berres’ smile wider.

“It’s exciting,” Berres said after walking with his coaches to the correct tunnel and gathering his gear. So exciting, in fact, that Berres had a hard time finding the words to describe it.

“It feels just great.”

That about sums it up.

Berres led 3-2 late in the third period and almost got taken down with 35 seconds left after Tensen grabbed his lower body.

Berres managed to wiggle away and score a takedown of his own to seal the win.

“We’ve seen him do that a lot,” Kimball coach Mike Schindler said. “He gets in those situations and he’s always in control. He can control a match.”

The match had to be stopped twice to take care of Berres’ bloody nose. Berres said that didn’t throw him off at all.

“I’ve been getting them all day, so I was kind of expecting it,” he said.

Once again, short and to the point.

This was Burres’ third appearance at the state tournament and Tensen’s second.

Even though he’s only a sophomore, Schindler talked about Berres’ leadership throughout the season.

“He set a goal to be a state champ this year and now he did it,” Schindler said. “It’s pretty cool. You work real hard to get to this point. He’s been a great leader.”
