When the Lourdes Academy girls soccer team’s offense gets on a roll, they can be tough to handle.
On Thursday, they proved once again to be that dangerous.
The Knights dominated the Omro Foxes, scoring five goals in the first half en route to a 6-1 victory in a WIAA Division 3 regional game on J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium on Thursday.
Those goals didn’t come right away fro the Knights, but when the did come, they came in bunches.
The first grouping came at the 10 minute mark of the first half. Michelle McDonald put the first goal on the board for the Knights with a rip at the 10:02 mark.
Their second goal came just minutes later when Laura McDermott corralled a high, loose ball and was able to settle it enough to get a good swing on it and sent it past Omro keeper Amber Jeffers to make it 2-0 in the 12th minute.
The second outburst came in the last 10 minutes. Roberts had two goals in that time frame, one in the 31st minute on a breakout and then one in the 38th minute on a nice pass from McDonald.
“We just gel so well together,” Lourdes’ Jess Roberts said. “We know what each other is going to do, where we are going to pass, what each other is thinking. It’s just so much easier.”
McDonald also added another goal on a low, seeing-eye shot in the 33rd minute. Those goals made it 5-0 for the Knights going into the break.
A lot of the Knights offense came on breakouts and in transition from the their midfield to their offense, something that they like to do.
“We have a really fast offense,” McDonald said. “We really like to find those breakaways because usually our offense is faster than their defense.”
Omro also had trouble staying in front of the Knights shooters, allowing them a little too much time to get their long shots off.
“They’re a team that can hit it from long with accuracy,” Omro coach Nic Douglas said. “Stepping to the ball would’ve prevented the majority of those.”
The Foxes mounted some decent chances into their own offensive end, but couldn’t connect on the passes they needed to to finish.
“We had pretty decent passing to get the ball down the field,” Douglas said. “But in the red zone, that one more good pass or touch to open yourself up for the good shot…it just dissolved from there.”
Lourdes put the game out of reach right away in the second half, getting their final goal from Lianna Hawi in the 41st minute.
Omro was able to tack on a goal right before the buzzer sounded by Taryn Bosquez to account for the final margin.
Kelli Calkins made eight saves in net for the Knights and nearly recorded the shutout. Jeffers made 10 saves in net for the Foxes.
For the Foxes, they hope that they can continue to improve like they have in the past few seasons next year.
“Every year now we’ve been improving on the previous year,” Douglas said. “If they really want the wins, we are just going to have to keep putting in the effort.”
Lourdes now has a date at Assumption this Saturday in a regional final game at 1 p.m. The Knights played the Royals twice this season and fell both times.
But now they know the correction they need to make: defense.
“We need to focus a lot on defense,” Roberts said. “The offense will come. They have one playmaker on the team who, if she doesn’t get the goal, she gets the other girls the goals. All we have to do is shut her down.”
