The La Quinta High School girls’ track and field team wrapped up the Desert Valley League title Thursday, and in the process ended Indio’s 22 DVL-meet winning streak with an 87-40 victory.
Led by Megan Huebner in the distance events and Kayla Wilson in the dashes — each won three events — the Blackhawks took an early lead over the Rajahs on Thursday and were never really in danger of relinquishing it.
Huebner won the 1,600 (5:37.81), the 800 (2:33.47) and the 3,200 (12:28.97), while Wilson won the 100 (12.28), 200 (24:21), and long jump (17 feet, 21/2 inches).
“We were both undefeated, that was our first league loss in three and a half years,” Indio girls’ head coach Becky Baker said. “It was a nice streak, but numbers sure make a difference and it showed today that they had more depth and obviously two stellar athletes like Kayla (Wilson) and Megan (Huebner) — they’re going to score a lot of points for their team.”
The Blackhawks’ surprisingly strong sophomore class was well represented by Nirie Boglino, who won the high jump (5-0) and the triple jump (32-7).
“The high jump was pretty intense because I had to fight for that first place the entire time, because I was competing against this Indio girl (Regina Bowman), who was jumping the same as me,” Boglino said, “and we were at 5 feet and I missed the first two jumps and I was really scared, but then I got over the third and I got that first place so I felt pretty good, and that’s my (personal record).”
Both teams came into the meet at 4-0 in league play. The La Quinta win improves the Blackhawks to 5-0 and drops the Rajahs to 4-1, sealing the DVL title for La Quinta with one league meet remaining for both teams.
La Quinta is at Palm Desert at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday and Indio is at Coachella Valley.
