Girls’ volleyball has now joined the girls’ tennis team, boys’ water polo team, boys’ cross country team, and girls’ field hockey team as champions in their respective sports. Whether at WPIALs or at the state level, North Allegheny has continued its championship success this year.
For the first time since 2008, the Lady Tigers won the class AAA WPIAL Championship by beating Bethel Park 3-0. The Lady Tigers were undefeated in the regular season and continued that trend through the WPIAL Playoffs. They beat Hempfield in the quarter-finals and then Norwin in the semi-finals. Both matches were won with ease, defeating each with a score of 3-0. Previously tough competition proved no match for the over powering team of 21 girls ranging from sophomores to seniors.
Senior Danielle Wall commented, “The girls bonded over the long season, from open gyms in the summer, to practices in season, to big section games, the girls were able to become close and play together as a unit.” The team chemistry was key to the team’s success, as always is the case in great teams.
When asked how it feels to go out on top of the WPIAL, Wall, the team’s outside hitter, said, “It feels phenomenal to go out on top, to leave as a senior and know you were the best is a great feeling.” Not only was it a high point in the careers of the nine seniors on the team, but it also helps boost the popularity of a growing sport within the younger age groups. “Volleyball is very popular right now and so it has drawn in many tall, athletic female athletes. NA offers programs to start girls in volleyball at the upper elementary and middle school level. This team was a culmination of many years of hard work and solid training by this particular group. Every now and then you are fortunate to have a team with all of the right pieces to accomplish great things,” said now head coach, Heidi Miller who was the Varsity Assistant Coach of the 2008 WPIAL Championship team. This is a great foundation for the future, not only are our Lady Tigers Champions this year but hopefully for many years to come.
