The Monmouth County Tournament Red Division quarterfinals matchup between top-seeded St. John Vianney and eight-seeded Middletown South had the right ingredients to be a classic pitcher’s duel, with SJV’s Kate Beriont and South’s Alli Podmajersky toeing the rubber in the circle.

This time around, Beriont was just a bit better. The Lancers’ lefty hurler didn’t allow a hit until Veronica Zega singled with two outs in the seventh, struck out six and walked three, while her teammates provided three runs on only three hits against Podmajersky, as Vianney (14-1) knocked off the Eagles (11-5) with a 3-0 win.

In the first inning, Amanda Durham reached on an error, went to second on Jackie Gallagher’s sacrifice bunt, and then scored after being caught in a rundown between third and home, beating the throw to the plate to make it 1-0. In the sixth, Durham singled in a run, as did Gallagher. Podmajersky finished with eight strikeouts and a walk.
