The Monmouth County Tournament Red Division quarterfinals matchup between top-seeded St. John Vianney and eight-seeded Middletown South had the right ingredients to be a classic pitcher’s duel, with SJV’s Kate Beriont and South’s Alli Podmajersky toeing the rubber in the circle.

This time around, Beriont was just a bit better. The Lancers’ lefty hurler didn’t allow a hit until Veronica Zega singled with two outs in the seventh, struck out six and walked three, while her teammates provided three runs on only three hits against Podmajersky, as Vianney (14-1) knocked off the Eagles (11-5) with a 3-0 win.

In the first inning, Amanda Durham reached on an error, went to second on Jackie Gallagher’s sacrifice bunt, and then scored after being caught in a rundown between third and home, beating the throw to the plate to make it 1-0. In the sixth, Durham singled in a run, as did Gallagher. Podmajersky finished with eight strikeouts and a walk.

ALLENTOWN 9, MIDD. NORTH 0: Winning pitcher Hayley Peterson allowed four hits, while Chelsea Turner and Erin Drennan each swatted doubles to lead a 10-hit attack, as the fourth-seeded Redbirds (13-4) captured the victory over the fifth-seeded Lions in a Red Division quarterfinal. Quinn Thornton went 2-for-3, while Nikki Alfano and Taylor Appel had the other two hits for the North (9-4).

MONMOUTH 7, RB CATHOLIC 5: The Falcons (8-7) used a five-run fifth inning to erase a one-run deficit and surge into the lead, then held on for the two-run victory in a White Division quarterfinal. Kayla Hueston went 2-for-4 with three RBI and staked Monmouth to a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the first. Laura Douglas was 3-for-3 and Colleen Phelan also whacked two hits for the Falcons. Dakota Canta had two doubles for RBC (9-5), which has lost four of its last five.

MANALAPAN 11, COLTS NECK 9: Chandler Matcovich bashed a two-run triple, followed by Olivia Carbone’s two-run homer which brought in the eventual game-winning runs during a nine-run sixth, as the Braves (5-11, 2-10) scored the victory in a Class A North battle. Carbone ended up 2-for-4 while Matcovich finished 2-for-3. For the Cougars, Taylor Terlizzi was 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a solo homer in the sixth.

JACKSON LIB. 7, DONOVAN 6: The Lions (11-5, 9-3) erased a four-run deficit with a seven-run fourth, as Laura Telfer drilled a two-run double and Chelsea Czapkowski added an RBI single, and Liberty edged the Griffins (8-6, 7-4) in a Class B South contest. Czapkowski ended up 3-for-3, while Amy Hickman got the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing three hits, two of which were hit by Samantha Broo.
