Lansing travels to Notre Dame Saturday in Class C quarterfinals

Coming off a 20-point, come-from-behind home victory in the opening round, the Lansing boys’ basketball team will look to keep up the momentum in a tough road test Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the Section 4 Class C tournament.

The sixth-seeded Bobcats (14-4) — who defeated Bainbridge-Guilford, 72-52, in Wednesday’s opening round — will be in Elmira on Saturday to face fellow Interscholastic Athletic Conference squad Notre Dame, the No. 3 seed, with tip-off set for 7 p.m. The Crusaders (15-3), who beat Delhi 73-42 in Wednesday’s opening round, are defending Class C champion.

Lansing and Notre Dame, who did not meet in the regular season, both finished second in their respective IAC Large School divisions — the Bobcats trailing North champion Waverly, the Crusaders finishing behind South champion and eventual overall champ Watkins Glen. The Senecas earned an opening-round bye and will play Unatego at 7 Saturday night in Watkins Glen.

The Lansing-Elmira Notre Dame winner will take on the Unatego-Watkins Glen winner on Wednesday in the Class C semifinals at the site of the highest remaining seed.

On the other side of the Class C bracket, No. 1 seed Sidney (16-1) plays host to eighth-seed Odessa-Montour (14-4) Saturday night. Sidney, which had an opening-round bye, is gunning for its fourth sectional title in the past 15 years (1998, 2000, ’07). Odessa-Montour — which knocked off Spencer-Van Etten on Wednesday, 56-49 — won the Class C title in 1986, and the Class D crown in ’93.

The other quarterfinal game in that half of the bracket pits fifth-seed Greene (13-3) against fourth seed Moravia (17-3). Greene advanced by taking out 12th-seeded Newfield on Wednesday, 65-54, while Moravia pounded 13th-seed Oxford, 77-44.

The Sidney-Odessa winner will meet the Greene-Moravia winner on Wednesday in the semis.

In Class D, No. 8 seed Southern Cayuga (9-10) travels to top-seeded Morris (15-1) for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal on Saturday, while No. 10 seed Marathon (7-11) — fresh off its 75-67 upset of No. 7 seed South Kortright — will be at Margaretville for the quarterfinal round.

The championship matchups in classes AA and A are already set. In AA, top seed Binghamton (13-3) will take on No. 2 seed Union-Endicott (13-5) at 7:45 p.m. Thursday at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. And in A, top seed Maine-Endwell (14-2) will play third-seeded Vestal (8-9) at 7:45 p.m. Friday at the arena. Vestal knocked off No. 2 seed Johnson City, 70-46, on Wednesday in the lone Class A semifinal.

Saturday’s Class B semifinals find No. 4 seed Whitney Point (16-2) at top seed Susquehanna Valley (13-1), and No. 3 seed Chenango Valley (12-6) at second-seeded Norwich (14-3). The winners will meet at 5 p.m. next Saturday at the arena for the championship.
