The Lansing High duo of junior William Koll and senior Connor Lapresi are both two victories from their second Division II state wrestling championships after going 2-0 on Day 1 of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships Friday at the Times Union Center.

Meanwhile, Ithaca High 132-pound sophomore Richie Burke was eliminated from the title chase with an opening-round loss.

Koll, wrestling at 126 pounds, scored two major-decision victories on Friday to advance to Saturday’s semifinals, which start at 10 a.m. The top-seeded Koll scored a 15-7 opening-round victory against Majed Mohamed of Lackawanna (Section 6), then advanced to the semifinals with another major decision, 13-4, against Daniel Vandyk of Salem (Section 2).

Koll (28-3), the son of Cornell wrestling coach Rob Koll, will face junior Nick Forget of Peru (Section 6) in the semis. The other semifinal will pit freshman Dakota Gardner of Fredonia (Section 6) against senior Jake Nicholson of Waterloo (Section 5).

Lapresi, the No. 2 seed at 138, opened with an 18-4 technical fall victory against senior Kasey Proper of Vernon-Verona-Sherill, then moved to the semifinals with a 12-4 major decision against Jordan Bushey of Peru (Section 7).

Lapresi (30-1) will face senior Daniel Reagan of Lewiston-Porter (Section 6) in Saturday’s semifinals. The other 138 semifinal features top-seeded Nick Tighe of Phoenix (Section 3) against senior Sean Romanski of Albany Academy (Section 2).

Burke (32-4) lost his opener, 2-0, to junior Brandon Lapi of Amsterdam (Section 2). A three-time Section 4 champion, Burke was slated to face West Genesee senior Connor Grome later Friday in the wrestlebacks.

Semifinal winners will advance to Saturday’s finals, which are scheduled for 6 p.m.
