LCAC Swimming: Estero girls, Cape boys wear crowns

Over the previous three seasons, Bean Faunce has been a constant supporter of her sister Lexi.

This season, they finally get to cheer on each other.

Bean Faunce, an Estero High School freshman, won the 100 butterfly in 59.79 seconds Tuesday afternoon at the DeLeon Aquatic Center, winning a Lee County Athletic Conference title in her first attempt and helping the Wildcats to the girls team championship as well.

The Fort Myers girls finished second.

“It’s really nice having her support,” Bean Faunce said of Lexi, who placed fourth in the 500 freestyle and third in the 100 backstroke.

“She’s just excited,” said Lexi, a senior, of her younger sister. “She’s happy to finally be a part of the team. She was always here supporting me. So now I’m excited to have a turn to support her.”

Bean Faunce said her coach has done a good job of not letting her use being a freshman as a barrier to success. Bean Faunce called herself an underdog.

“I would think so, because there are seniors who are faster than me,” Bean Faunce said.

Estero coach Jenn Seluk said she would have the same expectations of Bean Faunce the freshman as she would if she were a senior.

“For all of these kids, there’s no excuse,” Seluk said. “Whether they are a freshman or not, they go out and race for Estero High School.

“They’re out here. They’re training. They’re racing. They go out and leave it all in the pool. The bigger picture is who we are representing, and that’s Estero High School.”

Estero junior Dani Jordan did her part, winning the 50 (25.54 seconds) and 100 (54.99 seconds) freestyle events.

We have a very strong team this year,” Jordan said. “It’s a lot of fun.”

Cape Coral placed first and ahead of Fort Myers for the boys team title, led by Cape Coral’s Jason Tillotson, Cory Klemm, Herby Collan and Amar Turnadzic, who each won individual events and also swam as a team in winning the 200 medley relay championship.

Fort Myers senior Logan Samuelson, who has committed to Auburn University, won the 200 and 500 freestyle races and hopes to reclaim his 500 freestyle state title.

“I’m really happy with where I’m at,” Samuelson said. “I feel I’m where I want to be. You never know who’s going to step up. You can never take anything for granted, but I feel I’m a lot further along than where I was last year.”
