Lancaster Christian assistant Cliff Coleman looked at Jared Beard during a recent football practice.
“You are going to have to get in shape,” he told the senior athlete. “We’ve got to have you on the field.”
Yes, Beard will be a busy guy this fall for the Knights. With a roster at 24, Beard will do a lot of everything in 2013 on the football field.
* He will play wideout in LCA’s spread offense.
* He may have a few opportunities to carry the football.
* He will play safety on defense.
* He will return punts.
In short, he’ll do about everything but drive the team bus.
“The biggest thing I want to do is just help the team,” said Beard, who played at Blackman a year ago before transferring to Lancaster Christian with quarterback Matt Williams.
Neither have to sit out a season due to LCA being a non-TSSAA school.
Beard acknowledged there have been times he’s felt fatigued on the field already this season. There have been times he’s had to catch his breath.
“I’m trying to get used to it,” Beard said of the responsibilities.
Beard caught three passes for 40 yards at Blackman a year ago.
He’s a key part to LCA’s offense this season along with fellow receivers A.J. Morris and Hayden McKee. Morris, a sophomore and Pearl-Cohn transfer, already has offers from Tennessee at UCLA from his performances in summer camps.
“He’s got a big role on this team,” said LCA coach Rocky Peeler, a former defensive lineman at Austin Peay. “We think he could also be a Division I player.”
