Jalen Dartis and Brandon Jefferson, who helped Newark reach a Division I district final for a second consecutive year, will get to play one final game together on their home floor Sunday.
They are part of the Licking County all-star team that will host Muskingum Valley in the annual girls-boys basketball doubleheader at Newark’s Jimmy Allen Gymnasium. The girls start at 2 p.m., followed by the boys around 3:30 p.m. Admission is $5, good for both games.
Dan Walters will be honorary girls coach for Licking County, while and Walters will be honorary boys coach. They will be assisted by the Newark coaching staff.
In addition to Dartis and Jefferson, the Licking County boys will include Granville’s David Fraley; Licking Heights’ John Righter; Johnstown’s J.D. Arnold and Tim Sayer; Heath’s Ethan Langley; Utica’s Luke Holmes and Spencer Kendall; Watkins Memorial’s Kevin Crawford and Aarmanni Garnett; Licking Valley’s Chris Flanagan and Drew McArtor; Northridge’s Hayden Warner, Sean Higgins, Brady Charles and Kaleb Krump; and Granville Christian’s Ty Burson and Daniel Coplin.
Andy Slaughter, from Division III district finalist Crooksville, and West Muskingum’s Bill Crane will coach the Muskingum Valley boys. Their roster includes Zanesville’s Marcus Johnson, Rosecrans’ Tyler Johnston, Crooksville’s Lake Channel, John Glenn’s Grant Slack, Philo’s Dalton Boetcher, Morgan’s Andrew Barclay, West Muskingum’s Justin Huey, Tri-Valley’s Ethan Slaboden, Sheridan’s Matthew Freville, Maysville’s Kole Watts and New Lexington’s Alex Bryant.
The Licking County girls roster includes three players from regional runner-up teams: Newark Catholic’s Caroline Wollenburg and Maggie Layman along with Johnstown’s Marissa Sheets. Also on the team are Licking Valley’s Kelly Rutherford and Kassi Johnson; Utica’s Kelly Overton, Taylor Dush and Lareese Marston; Lakewood’s Sheridan Leistikow; Heath’s Taya Croom, Tiffany LaRue and Amber Brown; Granville’s Rachael Holt, Brittany Atkinson and Marlee Tannehill; Watkins Memorial’s Lou Nickel, Brittany Bonder and Kiki Welker; Northridge’s Lydia George and Licking Heights’ Alyssa Stanley.
Pat Miller of Muskingum Valley League champion and Division II district runner-up Maysville will coach a team that includes the Panthers’ Madison Smith and Kelsie Kirkbride, John Glenn’s Mariah Carson, Crooksville’s Brianna Finck, New Lexington’s Sydney Wycinski, Morgan’s Tianna Allen, Tri-Valley’s Kyrie Bumpus, Sheridan’s Autumn Hall, Philo’s Augusta Mershon, West Muskingum’s Dakota McKenzie and Zanesville’s Dani Weekley.
Licking County swept both games in 2012 at Tri-Valley. The girls beat Muskingum Valley 77-54 and the boys won 101-85.
