The 10th-ranked City High volleyball team held on to beat Linn-Mar 3-1 Tuesday in Marion.
The Little Hawks won 32-30, 12-25, 25-20, 26-24.
“Linn-Mar came out, (and) they were ready to play,” City coach Craig Pitcher said. “They did a good job of being aggressive. The tempo was a little different, and we didn’t adjust real well. Game 1 and Game 4, we had chances to lose, but I was proud we came back.”
Michaela Nelson had 19 kills and 15 digs for City, Rylee Price had 12 kills, Alexa Aldrich Ingram had nine kills, Ruth Grace had 44 assists, Sabrina Rodgers had 26 digs, and Shannon James had 12 digs.
City is 6-0.
* WEST HIGH 3, C.R. JEFFERSON 0: The Women of Troy won in four sets in Cedar Rapids.
The J-Hawks won the first set 25-23, but West won the next three 25-21 25-18 25-6. Laynie Whitehead had 12 kills and 23 assists for the Women of Troy. Freshman Ali Tauchen added six blocks while Toni Martins had 16 digs, Lizzie Klemme had 16 assists and Lead Best served three aces.
“It was the first time we came back after someone took a game from us so I was pleased with that,” West coach Kathy Bresnahan said. “Jefferson came out and really pushed us, and I think we responded well.
West is 5-4 overall and 2-0 in Mississippi Valley Conference.
* REGINA 3, DURANT 0: The Regals beat the Wildcats 25-19, 25-22, 25-17 in Durant.
Megan Bonnett led Regina with 38 assists while Tori Owens added 18 kills and Mackenzie Conlon had 22 digs.
“This was just a solid win over a conference team,” Regina coach Megan Eskew said. “Every time we’ve taken the court this season we’ve made improvements.”
Regina is 4-2.
* WEST LIBERTY 3, WILTON 1: The Comets won 23-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-21 in Wilton.
Hailey Daufeldt had 15 kills for West Liberty, Kayla Kaalberg and Audra Bridenstine each had 13 kills, Maddie Simon served 14-of-15 with four aces, Erika Bannavong served 14-of-15 with three aces, Cassedi Simon served 15-of-15 with 41 assists, Molly Kelly had 28 digs, and Erika Bannavong had 20 digs.
* SOLON 3, MAQUOKETA 0: The Class 4A second-ranked Spartans beat the Cardinals 25-11 25-23 25-20 in Maquoketa.
Vik Meade and freshman Kendra Cave each had seven kills for Solon while Rylee Smith added 11 digs and Katie Silberstein served four aces.
“It was a sloppy performance,” Solon coach Peter Gustin said. “But it’ll give us some motivation to get in the gym and fix things before heading to Linn-Mar on Saturday.”
Solon is 8-0.
* CPU 3, CCA 1: The Class 4A 13th-ranked Clippers fell to Center Point-Urbana 25-23 22-25 26-24 25-22 in Center Point.
“Center Point-Urbana is a tough team. We told the girls they’d have to be prepared to play five sets, but we fell short,” Clear Creek Amana coach Brian Bronzynski said. “But the season is a marathon not a sprint. I was pleased with the effort.”
CCA is 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the WaMaC.
