Friday night lights glow much brighter this week as we’ve reached the opening round of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs.

Eighteen MyCentralJersey-area teams will take to the gridiron at 15 venues, with each club looking to reach its respective sectional final four the following weekend.

Tonight’s slate includes three showcase games involving locals facing each other.

Showcase No. 1 is a rematch from last week as Sayreville makes a return visit to Hugh P. Walsh Field to take on Monroe. Just across the township border, showcase No. 2 takes place as Old Bridge plays host to Hunterdon Central in an intriguing matchup between teams that have never faced each other. Showcase No. 3 will feature Westfield, carrying a three-game winning streak, traveling to face unbeaten Ridge, in just the second meeting between the schools.

Join us at 6:45 p.m. Friday, when our team of reporters will begin to set the scene from their respective locations throughout the state. And once the games kickoff, Harry Frezza (@thefrez56), Greg Tufaro (@GregTufaro), Jerry Carino (@MCJGuy), Joe Martino (@JMartinoMyCJ) and a host of others will provide continuous updates.

After the games go final, be sure to check out our comprehensive coverage of who survived into next weekend’s semifinals in the Red Zone, the online home of high school football.
