It was a rough day for area tennis players at the WIAA State Tennis Meet.
None of the four area qualifiers could make it past their first round opponents, thus ending their season Thurday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
The closest an area qualifier came was in Division 1 doubles play, where the Oshksoh West doubles team of Michael Buege and Justin Xie nearly took the second set but fell in straight sets to the No. 11-seeded Matt Michael and Tarun Jella of Brookfield Central 6-2, 6-4.
The Oshkosh North doubles team of North’s Aron Kumbalek and Cade Francour also won a few games, but couldn’t get past No. 12-seeded team of Michael Ebsen and David Sinense of Marquette University High School 6-3, 6-2.
In Division 1 singles, Oshkosh North’s Brandon Hamm fell in his opening round match to Brian Davenport of Verona in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
The lone area Division 2 player, Ripon’s Ryan Long, couldn’t advance either, falling to the No. 7-seeded Peter Jaeger of St. Thomas More, 6-1, 6-2.
The state tennis meets continues today and runs through Saturday in Madison.
