Local roundup: Cody sisters spark Pawling field hockey team to win


Sisters Amber and Ashley Cody each had a goal and an assist as visiting Pawling defeated North Salem 3-1 in high school field hockey action on Tuesday.

Isabella Grillo also scored for Pawling (2-4), which won its second straight league game. Catie Dickinson made six saves.

“We were on our heels the first 15 to 16 minutes of the game and playing a lot of defense, and not playing at the caliber we’re capable of,” Pawling coach June Lagan said. “We finally started to step it up a bit and were able to counter their early goal. We started to get comfortable playing. In the second half, we lit it up, were aggressive and dominated early on.”

Pawling hosts Our Lady of Lourdes at 4:30 p.m. today.

Lakeland 8, Roy C. Ketcham 1 — Megan Saraceno scored the goal and Kara McConologue made 27 saves for Ketcham.

Boys golf

Jordan Stein fired a 2-over 38 as Millbrook defeated Ellenville 175-243 at Millbrook Golf & Tennis Club. Tyler Prater shot a 42 for the Blazers, who play today against Spackenkill at McCann Memorial Golf Course.

Saugerties 185, Highland 209 –Dante Fauci had a 49 for visiting Highland at the Lazy Swan Golf and Country Club Village.

Nick Armstrong had a 37 for Saugerties (4-5).

Girls tennis

Kayla Mesmain and Rachel Ng improved to 5-0 at second doubles and helped Beacon beat host Lakeland 3-2.

Kelli Moseman picked up a win at third singles, and the team of Adele Antalek and Jaimie Plihcik won at first doubles for the Bulldogs (4-1).

North Salem 5, Pawling 0 — Host Pawling did not win a set in dropping the match at Lakeside Park.

Arlington 6, Carmel 1 — Lydia Fox, Alicia Knights and Jillian Colon each won in straight sets as the host Admirals prevailed.

Franklin D. Roosevelt 3, Onteora 2 — Jess Schroedl was a winner in straight sets at first singles, leading host Roosevelt in the MHAL win.

The team of Alexis Ferrante and Kelly Wilson earned the third point for the Presidents (4-1).

Boys cross country

Lorenzo Mazzuca and John Fullam claimed the top two spots in the 5,000-meter run to lead New Paltz past Dover and Highland at Boyce Park in Wingdale. Dover’s Kevin McMorrow placed third and Highland’s Damien Stevens was sixth.

Red Hook splits — Red Hook defeated Webutuck 22-37 and lost to host Wallkill 26-30. Red Hook’s Sam Gilbert placed second.

Girls cross country

Cami Ferguson won the 5,000-meter race in helping New Paltz defeat Dover and Highland at Boyce Park in Wingdale.

Highland’s Kerry Gordon was second.

Wallkill 20, Red Hook 35 — Red Hook’s Rose Vigil placed sixth in 26:09 to lead his team at Wallkill.

Men’s soccer

Steven Domino stopped five shots in goal for host SUNY New Paltz in a 1-0 loss to Union.

Women’s cross country

Dutchess sophomore Meghan Kiernan, a Franklin D. Roosevelt High School graduate, was named NJCAA Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week.

Kiernan placed first among junior-college runners in the 5-kilometer Bard Invitational in 19:24.
