Local roundup: Tony Romanelli gives Beacon baseball a boost


Tony Romanelli struck out eight and walked three, tossing a complete game as the host Beacon High School baseball team defeated Lakeland 7-2 in its Section 1 Conference 1 League C opener on Friday.

“Tony went out and did a great job of getting ahead,” Beacon coach Bob Atwell said. “Offensively, we had some clutch hits to get us a lead.”

Romanelli doubled and had two RBI for Beacon (5-3). Will Coris went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBI.
Haldane 15, Nanuet 7 — Stephen Zalys was 4 for 5 with a double and three RBI as the host Blue Devils defeated the Golden Knights at Fishkill’s Dutchess Stadium.
Kenny Doxey was 3 for 4 with three RBI for Haldane, while teammate Ryan Koval was 3 for 4 with two RBI. Drew Ford and John Rotando had two hits apiece for the Blue Devils.

John A. Coleman Catholic 5, Webutuck 3 — LeShawn Thrasher and Hunter Coulthard had back-to-back RBI doubles in the sixth inning, but the host Warriors lost a Mid-Hudson Athletic League game.

Matt Starzyk had a fifth-inning RBI single for Webutuck (0-9).

Webutuck pitcher Mike Downing struck out seven and walked three over seven innings. The Warriors host Millbrook at 4:15 p.m. on Monday.

New Paltz 4, Rondout Valley 0 — Chase Sarvis tossed a four-hit shutout on the road late Thursday.

Ryan LaMark had two hits, including a triple, scored two runs and drove in another. Nick DiMarco added a run and an RBI, and Brian Pesavento drove in one run and had two hits.

New Paltz (5-4) hosts Marlboro on Monday.

Collegiate football

Marist will hold its spring football game tonight at 6 p.m. at Tenney Stadium, preceded by an alumni flag football game at 4 p.m. Admission is free to both.

Collegiate field hockey

Vassar coach Cara Reese resigned to accept the head coaching position at Wheaton College in Massachusetts.

Vassar was 19-49 in Reese’s two seasons.

Scholastic softball

Jamie Ferrante had three singles and an RBI in New Paltz’s 11-6 loss to Rondout Valley late Thursday in Accord. Ali Pannuto had a double, single and RBI.

Men’s track and field

A trio of Marist runners achieved IC4A qualifying times in the 10,000-meter run at the Penn Relays late Thursday in Philadelphia.

Will Griffin placed 15th in 30 minutes, 17.35 seconds. Arquimedes DelaCruz was 18th in 30:30.01. Joel Moss was 30th in 31:04.35 in the college men’s championship race.

Women’s track and field

Marist’s Katie Messina placed 26th in the Olympic Development 5,000 run at the Penn Relays late Thursday in Philadelphia in a time of 17:46.08.

Collegiate softball

Dutchess swept a Region XV doubleheader with Nassau late Thursday, 6-1 and 8-1. Ketcham graduate Abby Canning struck out 13 in the opener and six in the second victory.

In the first game, Beacon graduate Chelsea Dexter went 2 for 4 with a grand slam and two runs scored. In the second game, Canning went 2 for 4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Marlboro graduate Casi Kirk had two hits and two runs.

Dutchess is 14-2 overall and 12-0 in the region. The Falcons are the top seed for the Region XV Tournament, May 3 and 4 at Valhalla’s Westchester Community College.
