Leon High golfer Carter Thompson signed with Florida State on Monday.
Thompson, a two-time All-Big Bend selection and four-year varsity player for the Lions, is currently ranked No. 40 nationally in the American Junior Golf Association Boys Rankings.
He finished second in the Sea Island, Ga., Junior Jones Cup. The field included 88 nationnally-ranked players. Last July, Thompson finished third in the AJGA Tedesco Country Club Tournament n Boston.
In 14 matches this season, Thompson shot under par nine times.
He is a honors student at Leon, ranked seventh out of 440 seniors. Last month, Thompson was named to the American Junior Golf Association Hewlett Packard Scholastic All-American Team; one of 12 boys and 12 girls selected from across the country.
Thompson’s father, Dr. William Thompson, joined TOC in 1999 and specializes in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine.
At North Florida Christian last week, five athletes signed scholarships, headlined by pitcher Carson Sands and outfielder Matt Railey with Florida State.
Sands, a left-handed pitcher, has 31 career wins with a 1.31 ERA and 353 strikeouts.
One of the country’s most recognized players, Sands was a member of Team USA in 2011 and 2012 and last summer was named an Under Armor All-American and participated in the annual Baseball Factory-Under Armor All American game at Wriggly Field.
Railey hit .330 with 10 doubles four home runs last season after he missed his sophomore year due to injury.
Railey was a member of the Eagles’ 2011 state championship team, hitting .486 as a freshman.
Railey participated in the 2013 Perfect Game National in Minnesota and at the USA Team National Trials last summer in North Carolina.
Catcher Jared Barnes signed with South Alabama.
A four-year letterman, Barnes, one of the area’s top defensive catchers, has also played infield and pitched for the Eagles.
Outfielder JD Huggins signed with Gardner Webbe University.
Huggins hit .346 last season with five home runs and 28 RBIs. He has a career .337 batting average and will join older brother Bill, a 2012 NFC graduate and current catcher at Gardner Webb, in college.
Softball pitcher Lindsey Burt signed with Furman University.
A letterman since the seventh grade, Burt has posted 61 wins, with 703 strikeouts and a career 1.34 ERA going into her senior campaign. Lindsey also has a .493 career batting average.
At Maclay, volleyball star Halle Scott signed with Central Florida.
A four-year starter for the Marauders and the lone senior Scott tallied 215 digs and nearly 200 kills on the season.
