THE WINNER: Trey Touchet


School: Saint Thomas More (Lafayette, La.)
Grade: Junior
Position: Guard
Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 180 pounds

Athletic achievement: Touchet led the Cougars to a 34-4 record and the Class 4A state championship this past season. Touchet averaged 20.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game, shooting 57 percent from the field, 41 percent from 3-point range and 83 percent from the free throw line. In four Class 4A state tournament games, Touchet averaged 23.8 points. He amassed 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals in the 46-40 title-clinching victory against Istrouma (Baton Rouge, La.), capturing Class 4A state tournament Most Valuable Player honors.

Academic excellence: Also a track standout, Touchet has maintained a 4.00 GPA.

Exemplary character: A member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, he has volunteered on behalf of Habitat for Humanity, The Extra Mile’s adopt-a-family initiative and Miles Perret Cancer Services’ Games of Acadiana.


“Touchet is an outstanding basketball player and a team player,” said Marty Lewis, head coach of rival Cecilia (La.). “He is well-rounded as far as his basketball skills are concerned. If you need him to shoot it, he can. If you need him to take it to the hoop, he can. He is so good at controlling and adjusting his body when attacking the basket to draw fouls. He is also plays outstanding defense.”

THE FUTURE: Touchet will be a senior next year.
