Lourdes Academy defeats rival Markesan, wins Trailways North championship

By

Lourdes Academy 3, Markesan 1: It was the match Lourdes Academy had circled before the season started, and the Knights showed off some of their best volleyball of the season in toppling Markesan in four sets Tuesday night 25-14, 25-19, 24-26, 25-21 to finish unbeaten at 8-0 in the Trailways North to take home the regular season championship.

Kelli Calkins had a team-high 16 kills and Laura Chier had 23 digs, 10 kills, five blocks and three aces to lead Lourdes Academy, as head coach Jon Ellman said this past weekend’s matchup with Oostburg really helped his team coming into Tuesday’s match with Markesan.

“We played some of our best volleyball of the season over the weekend against them, and it carried over into this matchup and we played great volleyball,” Ellman said. “We played really well in transition and played well offensively attacking the net.

Hunter Godfroy had 11 kills, Crystal Combs added nine kills and Sam Jaeke dished out 32 assists as well to chip in for the Knights.

The third-set loss was the only set Lourdes Academy lost in all of conference play this season, and they will go into this weekend’s conference tournament hosted by the Knights as the top seed.

Lourdes Academy def. Markesan 25-14, 25-19, 24-26, 25-21.
