The Lourdes Academy baseball season came close in the toughest of ways on Friday.
The Shiocton Chiefs rallied in the final inning for three runs to top the Knights 6-5 in Shiocton in a WIAA Division 3 regional.
The Knights took a 5-3 lead into the final inning. But the controll got away from starter Chris Hetzel, who walked three batters in the inning.
The Chiefs took advantage, collecting two runs to tie the game.
Then came the dagger. The Knights made a spectacular play in the outfield, but a Shiocton runner tagged up at second. Lourdes struggled to get the ball back to the infield in time and the runner scored all the way from second to win the game.
“Mentally we just couldn’t come through and get the last three outs,” Knights coach Reed Tyriver said. “Walks have kind of been our bugaboo all year. We just did it one inning too many tonight.”
Hetzel had been pitching a solid game up to that point, allowing just three Shiocton runs and he only gave up three hits the entire game and struck out seven.
Hetzel, Jimmy Brooks and Austin Loos each tallied two hits for the Knights, who outhit the Chiefs 8-3 in the loss.
