Thirty-one and counting.
That’s Madison Central’s postseason winning streak after a 5-2 win over Oak Grove in the opening game of the 6A fast-pitch championship series Friday evening at Freedom Ridge Park.
The Lady Jaguars (26-2) will attempt to become the first MHSAA school to win four straight championships when Game 2 is played at noon today, with Game 3 to follow if necessary.
Sophomore Hayle Morse pitched and senior Katie Anne Bailey was once again the offensive spark for Madison Central. Morse allowed four hits and had a shutout until Emily Waits hit a two-run homer with two outs in the seventh. Payton Sheffield followed with a double before Morse finished the game by fanning Christian Quinn for her 10th strikeout.
Bailey led off the game with a single, stole second and third and scored on a single by Megan Murray to give Madison Central a quick lead.
“That set the tone for the game and gave us momentum,” said Lady Jaguars coach Kayla Watkins.
Bailey also doubled during a three-run Madison Central seventh inning that proved decisive, driving in the fourth run and scoring the last one.
