Safford broke open a close game in the second quarter and coasted to a 47-40 win over Many Farms in a Division III second-round state tournament game at the Walkup Skydome at Northern Arizona University.

Safford’s Jordan Abalos scored 18 points to key the win.

“My dad (coach Robert Abalos) told me to be stronger underneath, so I listen to him,” Jordan said. “They gave us some problems with their press early but we used our height to our advantage and didn’t get rattled by their defense.”

The game was tied five times, the last on a basket by Many Farms’ Alecia Begay with 5:12 left in the second quarter, making it 13 all. But Safford (26-6) went on a roll after that, outscoring Many Farms (25-7) 10-2 to take a 23-15 lead into the third quarter.

Abalos’ basket with two minutes to go in the third quarter put Safford up 31-19, and Many Farms never threatened after that, even though they closed to 45-40 with 56seconds to go. Montana Kouts’ bucket with 10seconds to go sealed the win for Safford.

“We finally we’re getting our passes and getting the ball to the basket,” Jordan Abalos said. “Once we got past their defense I knew we could score.”

Begay was the leading scorer with 22 points, while Safford’s Miranda Bingham scored 12 points.

“One of the keys for us was getting the ball out to a lot of people in the fourth quarter,” Jordan Abalos said. “In the end I think we just started to tire them out.”
