Season highlights: Jurek set two all-time state records at the Division I championships in the 200-yard individual medley (1 minute, 48.31 seconds) and in the 100 butterfly (47.80). Jurek overcame Scottsdale Chaparral freshman phenom Ryan Hoffer, who finished second in the fly at 48.18. The previous state records were held by Phoenix Brophy Prep’s John Wojciechowski (100 fly, 47.87, 2008) and Tucson Sabino’s Dave Rollins (200 IM, 1:49.41 in 2001) and Brophy’s Alex Lendrum (200 IM, 1:49.41 in 2008).
Jurek’s comments: “I was kind of nervous. I asked my coach to do the walk-out song (with his bagpipes, for the 200 IM). It was different, loosened me up. It kind of eased my mind, got the ball rolling. I tried to swim my race (in the 100 fly). I knew my last underwater was going to be critical. That’s where I won it.”
Coach Kerry Croswhite’s comments: “The thing that turned Mark loose at state was his intro song out to the deck in his 200 IM, with me playing my bagpipes to Scotland the Brave, which we deemed, ‘Chandler Oh Chandler.’ Joking aside, Mark was ready and was preparing since last state championship meet. That is the kind of dedication and foresight Mark Jurek has.”
