Athletic achievement: He led the Cardinals to a 22-8 record and the second round of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference playoffs, scheduled for May 26. At the time of his selection, Murphy batted .538 with two home runs, 31 RBI and a .942 slugging percentage. A two-time First Team All-Conference selection, he was named the Baltimore Sun Player of the Week for March 26 when he batted .909 (10-for-13) with 13 RBI and six extra-base hits.
Academic excellence: Murphy has maintained a B average.
Exemplary character: He has volunteered locally on behalf of a retirement home and as a youth baseball coach.
“Alex Murphy is a natural leader and I believe the best player in the state of Maryland,” said Calvert Hall head coach Lou Eckerl. “With what he brings to the field both offensively and defensively through the amount of hard work he puts in, I believe he is the best player to come through this area in many years.”
