Max Denny proves to be a more than capable replacement at linebacker

By

When Andrew McNulty graduated from Bishop Kelley (Tulsa, Okla.) last year, the Comets' coaches were worried how they would fill the hole left by the linebacker's departure.

They needn't have worried. Max Denny, McNulty's backup last season, has already broken McNulty's school record of solo tackles and is nine tackles away from the Comets' mark of 185 for overall tackles. On Friday in a 27-20 defeat of Memorial (Edmond), the senior linebacker had 31 tackles, including 19 solo tackles, an interception and recovered a fumble.

"We were worried, how would we replace (McNulty)," Bishop Kelley coach J.J. Tappana said. "He's proving us to be bad coaches. He made the decision that he would have a great year. He's all over the place on the field."

Only 5-11, and then less than his current weight of 185 pounds, Denny was considered too skinny to play every down last season. But he's made up for his lack of bulk with speed.

"To be able to set the school record is a big deal because that was set back in the 90s when a lot of teams were running the Power I and we were seeing a lot of tailbacks," Tappana said. "He's doing this against teams that are primarily running the spread."

Denny leads the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Performances of the Week. The rest of the top performances:
