Maysville boys, led by Murphy, stay competitive at state bowling tournament

In the program’s third consecutive trip to state, Maysville’s boys bowlers was sitting fifth heading into bracket competition of the state meet Saturday at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

The Panthers made it there on the strength of a 2,826-pin total, second only to Fairport Harding’s 2,879 at the completion of the singles play. They added an additional 484 from the Baker games, for a 3,310-pin total to qualify.

It was there Maysville faced No. 4 Canfield and were eliminated by the eventual 2013 state champions. Canfield went 181-187-198 in three Baker games to Maysville’s 173-160-182. The Cardinals defeated Kettering Fairmont in the final.

Maysville was led by senior Dean Murphy’s 597 (196-190-211), which earned him the 16th place overall. Freshman Walker Stalnaker had a 584 (240-167-177) and placed 23rd.

Junior Brandon Hatfield was 26th with a 577 series (188-201-188), junior Wesley Stalnaker finished with a 552 and senior Parker Bash had a 340 to lead Maysville.

Versailles’ Michael Davidson led all boys with a 664, followed by Fairport Harding’s Cody Zalar with a 645.

The 2012-13 campaign included winning sectional and district titles. The team was coached by Michael Clarke with assistant Katie Thien.
