McCutcheon baseball ascends to No. 1, defeats Kokomo

McCutcheon celebrated its first day atop the Indiana Baseball Coaches Association’s Class 4A poll by defeating Kokomo 7-2 Monday at the Mav Baseball Complex.

Logan Sowers hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to seal the victory for the Mavericks. Braden Giroux went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Dylan Kiracofe was 2-for-2.

After giving up two runs in the first inning, winning pitcher Mason Bruce pitched shutout ball over the next four innings with two strikeouts and two walks. Austin Kiracofe struck out three to record the save.

Baseball

Central Catholic 12

Rensselaer 2

RENSSELAER – Evan Kennedy doubled during a three-run inning and tripled in the Class A No. 2 Knights’ five-run fourth inning.

Adam Lovell and Gage Ulery also had two-hit games for Central Catholic. Jake Churchill, Cowan Olinger and Ulery drove in two runs apiece.

Lucas Richardson allowed three hits and struck out three over four innings to earn the victory.

North Montgomery 4

West Lafayette 3 (8)

Freshman Devon Zachary singled to left to score Vince Gwynn with the game-winning run.

Mitch Rice’s diving catch in the bottom of the seventh denied West Lafayette a game-winning hit. Winning pitcher Jalen West struck out six and allowed one earned run in seven innings.

Jack Erdman and Brian Bangs had three hits apiece for the Red Devils.

Seeger 11

N. Vermillion 2

CAYUGA – Jordan Stover went 4-for-5 with four runs scored to pace the Patriots’ 20-hit attack.

Dakota Ware homered among his four hits and drove in five runs for Seeger (8-1). Zach Stitt and Avery Acton each contributed three hits in support of winning pitcher Chandler White.

Tri-County 9

Attica 8 (8)

WOLCOTT – Riley Benner singled home pinch runner Zed Beckett in the bottom of the eighth for the Cavaliers (6-4).

Austin Jordan drew a walk to start the rally, and Beckett moved to second on Blake Justice’s sacrifice bunt.

Benner went 4-for-4 with thee RBIs and two runs scored. Brenden Kidd, Kyle Miller, Paul Budde and Jordan each had two hits for Tri-County.

Wade Keller went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Attica (6-5).

North White 7

South Newton 2

MONON – Luke Diener (3-0) pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven.

Darren Fleck collected three hits and an RBI for the Vikings (8-1).

Softball

Central Catholic 11

Seeger 4

Kelsey Harding drove in two runs during a 3-for-4 day and Brittni Bouse had two hits, including a double, and drove in two to support pitcher Erin Mecklenburg, who struck out nine Patriots.

N. Montgomery 8

Attica 7

ATTICA – Brittany Townsend and C.J. Trippett homered in the first inning to help North Montgomery build a 3-0 lead.

Trippett homered again in the fourth inning to help the Chargers take a 7-0 lead. Trippett went 3-for-3 with six RBIs.

Maci Kyger homered in the sixth inning and hit another during a six-run seventh for Attica.

Southmont 11

Covington 5

NEW MARKET – Payton Thompson and Brooke England each had three hits and two RBIs for the Mounties (7-3).

Lainey Holt was 2-for-3 with four RBIs for Covington (4-6).
